Quick answer: Steady buzzing or rustling inside a wall in August almost always means a yellowjacket colony has built in the wall void, entering through a siding gap, a soffit seam, or a crack around a vent. August is when this call comes in. Not June, not July — August. A yellowjacket colony that started as a single overwintered queen in May is now a few thousand workers, the nest has run out of room in whatever cavity it chose, and the colony is at its most defensive point of the year. If that cavity is the space between your exterior sheathing and your drywall, you’re going to hear about it.

How to confirm the nest is in the wall (and not just near it)

Three checks, none of which require touching anything:

Watch the traffic, not the wasps. Stand back fifteen or twenty feet on a warm afternoon and watch the side of the house. A wall-void colony produces a distinct pattern: a steady, two-way stream in and out of one single point — a siding gap, a soffit-fascia seam, a hole around a dryer vent or hose bib, a failed caulk line at a window. Wasps foraging in your yard wander in every direction; wasps working a nest fly a highway. A consistent line converging on one hole means that hole is the front door.

Listen with the room quiet. Go inside, kill the TV and the fans, and put an ear to the wall on the interior side of that entrance point. A mature colony makes a low, continuous rustling — closer to crumpling paper than to a single buzzing insect, and louder in the afternoon heat.

Feel for the warm spot. A few thousand wasps generate real heat, and the drywall directly over an established nest can feel noticeably warmer than the wall around it. In an advanced case you may see a faint stain bleeding through the paint where the nest’s moisture has soaked the drywall — a late-stage sign that means the nest is large.

One wasp at a time near a window is likely a wanderer. Several a day appearing at a light fixture, a pot light, or the gap around an outlet cover means the colony is already inside the cavity and working its way through.

Why you must not seal the entrance hole

This is the most common and most expensive mistake, and it’s almost always well-intentioned. The logic feels airtight: block the hole, trap the wasps, problem contained.

It doesn’t work that way. A plug of caulk or expanding foam doesn’t trap yellowjackets. What it does is close the only exit on a few thousand agitated insects looking for another way out — and the nest is already sitting against your interior drywall, which is considerably softer than the siding and sheathing outside. They go the direction of least resistance: inward.

The result is a wall that starts producing wasps into your bedroom, one or two at a time at first, then steadily, emerging around ceiling light fixtures, behind baseboards, through outlet plates, through a bathroom fan housing. The problem is no longer outside your house. It’s in the room where your kids sleep, and it’s become an emergency instead of an appointment.

The correct order is always: treat the colony first, confirm it’s dead, seal the entry afterward. Sealing is the last step of the job, not the first. Why store-bought spray fails on a wall void

The aerosol cans sold at every hardware store are designed for one job: knocking down a visible, exposed nest — a paper wasp umbrella under a deck rail, a small aerial nest on a soffit. On those, used properly, at dusk, from a distance, they can work. A wall void is a different problem, for three reasons.

You can’t reach the nest. The colony may sit eighteen inches or three feet from the entrance hole, between studs, behind insulation. Spray shot into the entry point coats the tunnel and maybe the outermost combs. The queen and the bulk of the brood are deeper in, untouched, and the colony repopulates within days.

Insulation absorbs the product. Batt insulation, blown cellulose and vapour barrier all soak up or block liquid aerosol. What you can reach with a straw nozzle is a fraction of what you’d need.

You’ve just angered a colony you can’t see. A partial knockdown on a mature August nest produces one reliable outcome: several hundred defensive workers pouring out of the hole while you’re standing on a ladder holding a can. Ladder falls, not stings, are what put people in hospital in these situations.

There’s a fourth reason worth noting: repeated aerosol into a wall void leaves residual product in a cavity that connects to your interior air. If the nest sits beside a bathroom fan duct or a poorly sealed outlet box, some of it ends up in the room.

What professional wall-void removal actually involves

A technician confirms the entry point and, where the layout is unclear, works out the nest’s likely position from stud spacing, the traffic line, and where sound and heat are strongest inside. The treatment is applied as a dust, not a liquid — a fine insecticidal dust injected into the void through the entrance. Dust is the right tool because it isn’t absorbed by insulation the way a spray is, it drifts through the cavity, and — critically — foraging workers walk through it and carry it back onto the combs and the brood. The colony treats itself from the inside out.

Then the technician leaves it alone, which is the part homeowners find hardest. Returning foragers need to contact the material, so the entrance stays open for 24 to 72 hours. Only once traffic has fully ceased does the entry point get sealed, with a material appropriate to the substrate, so next spring’s queen doesn’t find the same hole and start over. That last step is the one DIY attempts skip, and it’s why some houses get a wall nest three years running in the same spot.

What it costs, and the drywall question nobody mentions

Ask before booking.

Now the part most companies leave out. Treating the colony does not remove the nest material. The paper combs stay in the wall, and for most homes that’s fine — a dead nest dries out and is inert, and opening a wall to retrieve it costs far more than it’s worth. Two exceptions: stained drywall means moisture has entered the assembly and that section should be opened and repaired regardless, and a dead nest can attract secondary feeders like carpet beetles working on the brood. A contractor, not a pest control company, handles that side. Any company telling you the nest must come out of the wall as part of a standard $245 treatment is selling you something.

Where this happens most in the GTA

Wall-void colonies cluster in specific housing types, which is why some neighbourhoods generate far more of these calls than others.

Older stock with wood or aluminum siding and settled trim gaps is the classic case — the 1950s–70s bungalows and side-splits through Etobicoke and the established parts of Mississauga like Port Credit, Streetsville and Cooksville, where decades of seasonal movement have opened seams at exactly the height yellowjackets like.

Newer builds aren’t exempt, they just fail differently. Through Oakville and the newer Mississauga subdivisions we mostly find entry at unsealed penetrations — a hose bib gap, a dryer vent flap that no longer closes, or the seam where brick veneer meets a soffit return. Stucco and stone veneer hide their weep gaps well enough that a colony can work for two months unnoticed. The worst version is a two-storey with a finished attic, where the nest sets up in a knee-wall cavity: a large, insulated, undisturbed void with living space on both sides.

How do I know it’s yellowjackets and not honeybees? It matters, because honeybees in a wall need a beekeeper, not an exterminator. Yellowjackets are smooth, bright yellow and black, and fly a fast, direct line. Honeybees are fuzzier, more amber-brown, with slower and more scattered traffic — and they produce wax and honey, so amber seepage rather than a grey water stain means stop and call a beekeeper. Will the colony die on its own in winter? Yes — an Ontario colony dies with the first hard frosts and the nest isn’t reused. That’s true, and it’s a bad reason to wait: August to October is precisely when the colony is largest, most defensive, and most likely to break through interior drywall. Waiting out a nest already producing wasps in a bedroom means eight to ten weeks of the worst part of the season.

Can I wait until evening when they’re less active and spray then? Timing is the one thing DIY advice gets right — wasps are least active after dark and in cool temperatures. It doesn’t solve the wall-void problem. You still can’t get product to the combs, and a partial knockdown still leaves an agitated colony against your drywall. Good timing on the wrong method is still the wrong method.

How long until the buzzing stops? Traffic drops noticeably within 24 hours and stops within about three days, with reduced sound for a day or two after as the last foragers return. Steady traffic after a week means the treatment didn’t reach the combs — tell us and we’ll come back.
