How to Know You Have Wasps

Early detection is the key to fast, cost-effective elimination. Here's what to look for:

  • βœ“ Visible nest β€” paper-like grey structure under eaves, in shrubs, or in the ground
  • βœ“ High volume of wasp activity near a specific area of your home
  • βœ“ Wasps entering and exiting a hole in the ground, soffit, or wall
  • βœ“ Chewing sounds from inside walls or soffits (active colony)
  • βœ“ Unexplained wasp presence inside the house (indicating a wall cavity nest)

Species Found in Ontario Homes

Yellow Jacket (Vespula spp.)

Ontario's most aggressive wasp. Bright yellow and black. Nest in the ground or wall voids. Highly defensive β€” will chase threats. Peak aggression August–October.

Bald-Faced Hornet (Dolichovespula maculata)

Large, black and white. Build distinctive grey paper nests in trees, shrubs, and under eaves. Highly aggressive defenders. Sting without provocation if nest is nearby.

Paper Wasp (Polistes spp.)

Slender, brown/orange. Open umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, porches, and door frames. Less aggressive than yellow jackets but will sting when disturbed.

European Hornet (Vespa crabro)

Ontario's largest true hornet β€” up to 35mm. Yellow/brown colouring. Active at night (can be attracted to lights). Nest in hollow trees and wall voids.

How We Eliminate Wasps

A science-based, 4-step approach that treats the root cause β€” not just the symptoms.

1

Nest Location + Assessment

We locate the nest (including inside walls and underground) and assess the species, colony size, and access requirements. We wear full PPE β€” no shortcuts.

2

Direct Nest Treatment

We apply insecticide directly into the nest entry point, targeting the colony. For underground nests, we treat the tunnel entrance. For aerial nests, we use extension equipment to reach safely.

3

Nest Removal (where accessible)

Once the colony is eliminated (typically within 24–48 hours), we remove the physical nest to prevent reoccupation by scout wasps.

4

Entry Point Sealing

For wall-void or soffit nests, we seal the entry point after elimination to prevent future colonies from using the same cavity.

Wasps Control β€” FAQ

Is it safe to remove a wasp nest myself?

We strongly advise against it. Yellow jacket and bald-faced hornet colonies can mobilize hundreds of wasps within seconds of a disturbance. Without professional PPE and the correct insecticide application, DIY removal has resulted in serious injury and anaphylactic emergencies. Same-day professional service is available.

Can you treat a wasp nest inside a wall?

Yes. Wall-void nests are one of our most common call types. We inject insecticide into the void through the entry point, which eliminates the colony without opening the wall. After elimination, we seal the entry point.

How soon after treatment can I use my yard?

We recommend staying away from the nest area for 24–48 hours after treatment while the colony collapses. After that, the area is safe for normal use.

The same spot keeps getting nests every year. Why?

Wasps scout for locations used by previous colonies and reuse the same entry points and cavities repeatedly. After elimination, sealing the entry point is essential to breaking the cycle.

Do you treat ground wasp nests?

Yes. Ground nests (common with yellow jackets) are treated by injecting insecticide into the tunnel entrance at dusk when most foragers have returned. We then seal or mark the area until the colony is fully eliminated.

What if I'm allergic to wasp stings?

Call us immediately β€” same-day service is available across Ontario. Do not approach the nest. If you've been stung and have a known allergy, seek medical attention first, then contact us to arrange nest removal while you're safe.
