Spiders in Ontario
Species Found in Ontario Homes
Wolf Spider (Lycosidae)
Large, hairy, ground-hunting spiders. Do not build webs to catch prey. Carry egg sac and young on their body. Alarming in appearance but harmless to humans.
Cellar Spider (Pholcidae)
Long-legged 'daddy long-legs' spiders building messy webs in basements and corners. Extremely common. Harmless but webs accumulate quickly.
Northern Black Widow (Latrodectus variolus)
Present in southern Ontario, particularly Niagara region. Neurotoxic venom β seek medical attention immediately if bitten. Identifiable by red hourglass marking on abdomen.
Fishing Spider (Dolomedes spp.)
Large, patterned spiders found near water β cottage country, lakeside properties. Alarming size but harmless. Can walk on water surface.
House Spider (Parasteatoda tepidariorum)
Small, brown, builds messy cobwebs in corners and window frames. Ontario's most common household spider. Completely harmless.
Our Process
How We Eliminate Spiders
A science-based, 4-step approach that treats the root cause β not just the symptoms.
Inspection + Species ID
We identify the spider species present, assess population density, and identify conditions attracting spiders (exterior lighting, insect populations, clutter, moisture).
Web Removal + De-Webbing
We physically remove existing webs from exterior eaves, window frames, foundation, and interior spaces β eliminating harborage and reducing the visual presence immediately.
Residual Perimeter Treatment
We apply residual insecticide around the foundation, window frames, garage doors, and other entry points. This creates a chemical barrier that kills spiders and their insect prey on contact.
Interior Crack & Crevice Treatment
For interior infestations, we treat basement joists, window wells, and wall voids where spiders concentrate. Our Insect Control plan includes spider coverage in every seasonal visit.
Recommended Plan
Quarterly Protection
The best fit for ongoing spiders protection in Ontario.
Common Questions
Spiders Control β FAQ
Are any Ontario spiders dangerous?
The Northern black widow exists in southern Ontario (particularly the Niagara peninsula and St. Catharines area) and is venomous. However, the vast majority of Ontario spiders are completely harmless to humans. If you find a spider with a red marking on its abdomen, don't handle it and call us.
Why do I suddenly have so many spiders in fall?
In late summer and fall, spiders reach their peak size and activity as they search for mates and shelter before winter. They're not 'invading' β they're moving indoors through gaps and cracks. This is the best time to treat: a perimeter treatment in AugustβSeptember significantly reduces fall/winter spider activity.
Do spiders mean I have other bug problems?
Almost always yes. Spiders follow their food supply. A high spider population indicates a healthy population of the insects they're feeding on β usually flies, moths, or ants. We treat both in our Insect Control plan.
Can I get rid of spiders without pesticides?
Partially. Removing webs, sealing exterior gaps, reducing outdoor lighting (which attracts the insects spiders feed on), and reducing moisture and clutter all help. But for large populations, a residual perimeter treatment is the most effective solution.
Is spider treatment included in your Insect Control plan?
Yes. Our $845/yr Quarterly Protection plan covers spiders along with ants, earwigs, centipedes, silverfish, and other common insects. Four seasonal visits provide year-round perimeter protection.
