Is it actually a pantry moth?
The pest almost every Ontario kitchen gets is the Indian meal moth, easy to identify once you know what to look at. The adult is 8 to 10 mm long with distinctly two-toned wings: pale grey or cream across the half nearest the head, coppery reddish-brown across the outer half. That colour split is the giveaway — nothing else in a kitchen looks like it.
You will usually find the larvae before the adults, as fine silk webbing — matting the surface of flour, clumping oats together, or running along the seam inside a bag. The larvae are small cream-coloured caterpillars, and they are often spotted on the ceiling or the top edge of a cupboard door, because when they are ready to pupate they leave the food and travel upward and outward. A cream-coloured worm on your kitchen ceiling is a pantry moth larva looking for somewhere to spin a cocoon, and it means the source has been active for weeks.

They came home with the groceries
This is the fact that reframes the whole problem, and most people resist it: your house did not attract pantry moths. You bought them.
Indian meal moth eggs are laid into dry goods at the production, storage or distribution stage. Packaging is not a barrier — larvae chew through paper, cardboard, cellophane and thin plastic, and eggs are microscopic. Bulk bins add exposure, since product sits open and gets topped up rather than rotated out.
Highest-risk items in an Ontario kitchen, roughly in order:
- Birdseed — the most common source we find, and the one nobody suspects because it lives in the garage
- Pet food, especially large bags kept more than a month
- Flour, cornmeal and whole grains, particularly whole-wheat and stone-ground
- Rice, oats, quinoa, dried beans, nuts, dried fruit, seeds

Find the source — the part that actually matters
Every other step is wasted if you skip this one. There is almost always one item badly infested and acting as the factory, plus a few lightly affected neighbours.
Empty the pantry completely, onto the counter. Non-negotiable — the infested bag is reliably the one at the back you forgot about.
Inspect every dry good individually. Hold it to the light, looking for webbing, clumping, fine sandy debris at the bottom of a bag, or larvae. Check package seams and folds, and under the lid rim of anything in a container.

Discard the source outside immediately — not into the kitchen bin.
Freeze the survivors. Anything you want to keep but cannot be certain about: bag it, squeeze out the air, freeze at −18 °C for at least 72 hours. Freezing kills every life stage including eggs, and it is the standard sanitation approach recommended by extension entomologists including Cornell’s integrated pest management program.
Then clean the empty space properly. Vacuum first, with the crevice tool — shelf corners, shelf-support peg holes, the underside of each shelf, the gap where shelf meets wall, the door hinge recesses. Larvae pupate in exactly these spots. Empty the vacuum outside, then wipe with hot soapy water. Skip the vinegar-and-essential-oil recipes; they smell nice and kill nothing.
Restock into glass or hard plastic with gasket seals. This is the step that prevents the sequel — it stops an infested new purchase from spreading, and contains the problem to one item next time.
Why you should not spray your pantry
The answer is firm: pesticide application in a food storage area is inappropriate, and in most cases the label prohibits it outright. In Canada the label is the law.
More practically, it does not work. The larvae are inside sealed packaging or tucked into a peg hole where a surface spray never reaches them. You would be putting residue into the space where your food lives, in exchange for killing a few adults that were going to die in two weeks anyway — and the adults are not the problem. They do not even feed. An adult Indian meal moth has one job, laying the next generation. Killing the ones you can see while the source bag sits at the back of the shelf changes nothing.
Pheromone traps monitor. They do not cure.
Sticky pheromone traps attract adult males, and they are genuinely useful — as instrumentation. They tell you whether the population is still producing adults. Put fresh traps up after your reset and check them at four and eight weeks: catches falling to zero means you found the source, catches continuing means you did not.
What they cannot do is control an infestation, because they catch a fraction of the males and none of the females or larvae. Sold as a solution, they are a bad product. Used as a thermometer, they are the best five dollars in the process.
When they keep coming back
You did the full reset and six weeks later there are moths again. This happens, and it means one of two things.
Either you missed a source — usually not food. Check the garage, the basement pantry, a decorative arrangement, a bag of grass seed, the cupboard above the fridge nobody opens.
Or larvae are pupating outside the food — behind trim, in the gap between cabinet and wall, inside shelf-support holes, under the toe-kick, in ceiling corners. Some wander several metres from the food before spinning up, so a pantry that looks clean can still be seeding adults from a dozen cocoons in structural voids.
