Do Ultrasonic Pest Repellers Actually Work? An Honest Ontario Answer
Quick answer
There is no credible evidence that plug-in ultrasonic repellers control mice, rats, spiders, ants or cockroaches in a real house. University research finds the same pattern going back decades: rodents react for a few days, then habituate completely and go back to nesting and breeding within feet of the device. Ultrasound also does not travel through walls, cupboards or furniture — which is exactly where mice live. Health Canada does not evaluate these devices for efficacy the way it evaluates registered pesticides, so “proven effective” on the box means nothing was proven to a regulator. Sealing entry points, targeted trapping and monitored stations are what end an infestation; a year-round plan is what stops it starting again.
Every September the same thing happens in Ontario homes. Nights drop into single digits, mice that spent the summer in the ravine start testing the foundation, and somebody hears a scratch behind the kitchen cabinet at 11 p.m. The next day a plug-in ultrasonic repeller arrives on the doorstep.
We get called to those houses in November. By then there is a nest in the insulation, droppings behind the stove and a chewed dishwasher line. The repeller is still glowing in the hallway outlet.
This is the honest answer — the research, what these devices can and cannot physically do, and how to tell whether your twenty dollars bought anything.
What the research actually says
Ultrasonic repellers have been studied for a long time, and the results are unusually consistent for pest control — a field where honest disagreement is normal.
Cornell University’s New York State IPM program reviewed the evidence and titled its summary Ultrasonic Devices? Ultra-Ineffective. The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension’s bulletin on sonic pest repellents reached the same conclusion across insects and rodents alike.
The pattern is not “these do nothing.” It is more specific than that:
Rodents notice the sound. Then they stop caring. Mice hear well into the ultrasonic range, so the initial reaction is real — animals move away from a novel, unpleasant stimulus. But a mouse’s drive to find warmth, food and a nesting site in September is enormous, and an annoying noise with no consequence attached stops being a threat. In study after study, habituation sets in within days. The mice resume normal behaviour, sometimes nesting in direct line of sight of the emitter.
Insects mostly never cared. Ants, cockroaches and spiders do not have hearing organs that respond to airborne ultrasound in the first place. There is no mechanism for the device to work on them, which is why “repels spiders and roaches” tends to be the weakest claim on any product page.
The sound does not go where the pests are. Ultrasound is high-frequency, low-energy and extremely directional. It does not pass through a drywall partition, a cupboard door, a couch, or a floor — it reflects and it dies fast. Meanwhile a house mouse spends nearly all of its life inside wall voids, under cabinet kickplates, above ceilings and behind appliances, every one of which is acoustically shielded from your hallway outlet. You are treating the empty middle of a room while the animal lives in the walls.
Why Health Canada’s silence is not an endorsement
A common assumption: if it is on the shelf at a Canadian retailer, somebody checked that it works.
For registered pesticides, broadly true — Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency assesses safety and efficacy before a product can be sold. For pest control devices, the picture is different. Health Canada has been consulting on expanding how devices are regulated, most recently in its proposed amendments to the Pest Control Products Regulations covering pest control devices. That consultation tells you the current state: most of these gadgets are not held to a registered-pesticide efficacy standard. Nobody made the manufacturer prove the thing works.
The “it worked for a week” effect, explained
This is the most common feedback we hear, and it deserves a straight answer rather than an eye-roll, because the person is not imagining it. Three things overlap.
Habituation is real and it is temporary. The device genuinely did displace activity for a few days. That is documented. So is the fact that it stops.
Mice are patchy by nature. A single mouse forages a small territory unevenly. A quiet week is completely normal in an active infestation — it does not mean the population left, or that anything you did caused the quiet.
You changed something else at the same time. Almost nobody plugs in a repeller and does nothing else. They also clear the crumbs behind the toaster, move the dog food into a bin, and stop leaving the garage door open at night. Those changes do real work. The repeller takes the credit.
The tell is weeks three through six. If the scratching, the droppings along the baseboard or the smell come back while the device is still running, the device is not the variable that matters.
What the money buys instead
A mid-range ultrasonic unit runs roughly twenty to forty dollars, and most homeowners buy three or four to “cover the house.” Call it a hundred dollars. Spent on the things that physically stop mice, that hundred dollars goes surprisingly far:
- Steel wool and exterior-grade sealant. A house mouse fits through a gap the width of a pencil — about 6 mm. Packing copper or stainless wool into the gap where the dryer vent, gas line or hose bib enters the foundation, then sealing over it, is unglamorous and permanent. Mice cannot chew steel.
- Hardware cloth over weep holes and vent screens. Quarter-inch galvanized mesh, not window screen.
- A door sweep on the garage side door. The most common entry point we find in Richmond Hill and Vaughan subdivisions built after 2000 is a garage service door with a worn sweep and a 10 mm gap at the strike side.
- Snap traps placed correctly. Placement beats product — perpendicular to the wall, trigger toward the baseboard, in the runway.
That is not a sales pitch. That is a Saturday, and for a small, early problem it is often enough.
When the gadget failing means something bigger
Call for a professional inspection when any of these are true:
- You are still catching mice after two full weeks of correct trapping, or the catch rate is not dropping.
- You hear activity in more than one area — a kitchen wall and an upstairs ceiling means the population is using the stud bays as a highway, not one mouse that wandered in.
- You find droppings in more than one room, or in a second-storey space. Mice upstairs mean established interior runs.
- There is a smell. A dead mouse in a wall void is a two-to-three-week problem you cannot fix from the living room.
- You find chewed wiring, a chewed appliance line, or nesting material in an appliance cavity. That is a damage-and-fire question, not a pest question.
Handle droppings and nesting material carefully. Alberta Health Services publishes a clear seven-step guide to safe clean-up of mouse droppings, nests and dead mice — ventilate first, wet the material with disinfectant rather than sweeping or vacuuming, wear gloves. Aerosolizing dried rodent waste is what you are avoiding.

Do ultrasonic repellers work on mice at all? Briefly, and then not. Mice hear the sound and initially avoid it, but habituate within days and resume normal nesting and feeding. Will an ultrasonic repeller keep spiders, ants or cockroaches away? Are ultrasonic repellers safe for pets? For dogs and cats they are generally regarded as harmless, though some animals are visibly bothered. Pet rodents and rabbits are different — they hear in that range acutely, and a repeller near a cage is a genuine welfare problem.
Why did it seem to work at first? Three things overlap: real short-term habituation, the naturally patchy activity of a small mouse population, and the other changes you made at the same time — food storage, cleaning, closing doors. Weeks three through six are the honest test.
How do I know if I have one mouse or an infestation? Droppings in more than one room, activity in more than one area, or a catch rate that is not declining after two weeks of correct trapping all point to an established population rather than a single animal.
