Carpet Beetles in Your House? How to Identify Them and Get Rid of Them (Ontario)

Quick answer: The small striped beetles on your window sill are adult carpet beetles trying to get out. The damage is done by their larvae — bristly, tan, carrot-shaped grubs hiding under furniture, along carpet edges, and in stored wool. Vacuum and launder aggressively, clear the protein sources they feed on (wool, hair, lint, dead insects), and store clean textiles sealed. If holes or shed skins keep reappearing after two thorough cleanings, the infestation is established somewhere you have not found, and it is time for a professional inspection.

Every September we get the same call. A homeowner in Mississauga pulls the wool sweaters out of a basement bin for the first cold snap, finds a scatter of small holes, and assumes moths. Sometimes it is moths. Often it is carpet beetles — a completely different insect that needs a different response, and one that most Ontario homeowners have never heard of despite it being one of the most common fabric pests in the province.

Getting the identification right matters, because the two pests hide in different places and the treatment that works on one will miss the other entirely.

What a carpet beetle actually looks like

There are two life stages you will encounter, and they look nothing alike.

The adult is small — roughly 2 to 4 mm, about the size of a pinhead or an apple seed at most. Varied carpet beetles are mottled black, white and orange in an irregular pattern. Black carpet beetles are solid dark brown to black and slightly more elongated. Adults are harmless to your belongings. They eat pollen and nectar, and they are almost always found near light: window sills, light fixtures, the inside of patio doors. They are trying to leave.

The larva is the one causing the damage. It is 3 to 5 mm, tan to reddish-brown, distinctly bristly or hairy, and tapered like a tiny carrot. Larvae move slowly and avoid light, so you will not find them on the sill. You find them under the edge of an area rug, in the gap between baseboard and broadloom, inside a closet on a folded wool blanket, or in the dust at the back of a forced-air floor register.

The other thing you find is shed skins. Carpet beetle larvae moult repeatedly, and the discarded husks look like more larvae — hollow, brittle, the same shape. A pile of shed skins with no live insects still tells you there is an active population nearby. It is often the first hard evidence people notice.

Carpet beetle or clothes moth? The misdiagnosis that wastes a season

This is the single most useful distinction in this article, and it is worth being precise about because the two are frequently confused.

Damage pattern. Clothes moth damage tends to be concentrated — several holes clustered in one area of a garment, often where the fabric was soiled with sweat or food. Carpet beetle damage is more scattered and more likely to affect the surface of a fabric, grazing the nap off a carpet or leaving thin, irregular holes spread across a sweater.

Webbing. Clothes moths leave silk. You will see fine webbing, silken tubes, or grains of frass stuck together in a sticky mat. Carpet beetles produce no silk at all. If there is webbing, it is moths.

What you actually see moving. With moths, you may see small buff-coloured adults fluttering weakly out of a closet — they avoid light and fly poorly. With carpet beetles, you see hard-shelled beetles at the window and bristly larvae in dark corners.

Diet breadth. Clothes moths are fairly specialised to animal fibres — wool, cashmere, silk, felt. Carpet beetles eat a much wider menu of animal protein: wool and silk, yes, but also pet hair, human hair in dust bunnies, feathers in duvets and pillows, taxidermy, dried pet food, and the accumulated dead flies in a light fixture or attic window channel.

That last point explains why carpet beetles come back in houses that have been cleaned thoroughly. If a population is living on a decade’s worth of dead cluster flies in a soffit, laundering your sweaters will not touch it.

Why they show up on Ontario window sills in the fall

Two things happen at once in September and October across the GTA and Durham.

First, adult beetles that developed over the summer inside the structure become active and head for light, trying to get outside to feed on flowering plants. This is why the sill is where you notice them — it is an exit route, not a nest. Finding six adults on a Whitby window sill in October is a sign that larvae have been feeding somewhere in that house since spring.

Second, the seasonal wardrobe swap moves stored textiles. Wool comes out of bins, cottage blankets come home, area rugs get unrolled. Damage that accumulated quietly over six months in storage becomes visible in one afternoon. The infestation is usually older than the discovery.

There is also a genuine entry route worth closing: adults fly in through open windows in spring and summer and lay eggs in undisturbed lint. Intact screens are cheap insurance against next year’s generation. The clean-out protocol that actually works

Carpet beetles are beaten by mechanical removal and heat, not by fogging a room. Work in this order.

1. Find the food source before you clean. Pull area rugs back at the edges. Lift and inspect under furniture that has not moved in a year. Check closet floors, the underside of upholstered seating, stored wool, felt piano hammers, wool rug fringes, and any taxidermy. Vacuum out floor registers and check attic window channels for dead-insect accumulation.

2. Vacuum hard, then discard the bag. Use a crevice tool along every baseboard, carpet edge and under-furniture line. Vacuuming physically removes eggs, larvae and shed skins, and it is the single highest-yield step. Empty the canister outside or remove the bag and put it in an outdoor bin immediately.

3. Launder or freeze the textiles. Anything washable goes through a hot wash and a hot dryer cycle — heat kills all life stages. Items that cannot take heat can be sealed in a bag and frozen at –18 °C or below for at least a week. Dry cleaning also kills them.

4. Store clean. This is the step people skip. Carpet beetles are drawn to fibres soiled with sweat, body oils and food residue. Wool put away dirty is far more likely to be attacked than wool put away clean. Store in sealed bins or garment bags, not cardboard boxes or open shelving.

5. Reduce the lint reservoir. Dust bunnies under beds and behind dressers are made largely of hair and skin cells — carpet beetle food. Routine cleaning in those neglected zones is genuine prevention, not housekeeping perfectionism.

When it is no longer a cleaning problem

Do one thorough pass using the protocol above. Then wait three to four weeks and look again.

If you find new larvae, fresh shed skins, or new damage after a genuine clean-out, the population has a reservoir you have not located. Frequently asked questions

Are carpet beetles dangerous to people? They do not bite and they do not transmit disease. Some people develop an itchy rash from contact with the larval bristles, which is occasionally mistaken for bed bug bites — a misdiagnosis that sends homeowners after entirely the wrong pest. The real cost is damage to textiles.

Do carpet beetles only live in carpet? No. The name is misleading. They feed on any animal-protein material: wool, silk, felt, feathers, pet hair, dried pet food, dead insects and taxidermy. Homes with no carpet at all get carpet beetles.

Will cedar or mothballs stop them? Cedar loses effectiveness quickly and was never reliable against carpet beetles at household concentrations. Mothballs only work in a sealed container at sustained vapour levels, which an open closet never reaches. Neither substitutes for cleaning, heat and sealed storage.

I killed the beetles on the window sill. Am I done? Probably not. The adults at the window are leaving, not feeding. Killing them does nothing about the larvae in the dark corners, which is where the damage happens.

Do I need to throw out infested clothing? Usually not. Hot washing, hot drying, dry cleaning or a week in the freezer kills every life stage. Damaged fibres will not repair themselves, but the garment is not a contamination risk once treated.
